Discovering Golf On The Algarve – Golf Holidays Portugal Style

When it comes to golf holidays Portugal has the range of courses and year round fine weather that makes it one of Europe’s favorite golf destinations. This article highlights the Algarve coast in southern Portugal which has experienced 2 decades of extensive golf course development.

For many seeking the ideal golf holiday the Algarve has the selection of courses and scenery to make for a memorable golf trip. Starting in Vilamoura, as many do, there are literally dozens of courses to play all within a short drive of the village.

Of the Oceanico resorts in the area, the Victoria and Old Course are the two finest. The Old Course has mature consistent greens and fairways and is beautifully landscaped throughout. The Victoria course is less hilly but no less picturesque.

The nearby Quinta do Lago Laranjal actually has 2 courses facing out onto the Atlantic and the south course is the one to play if stuck for time. The quality of the Bermuda grass fairways and pristine greens might belie the fact that this is a tough course to play with plenty of traps and obstacles to navigate.

For a quieter time the western Algarve has a more leisurely pace of life and the golf is dominated by the westerly sea breezes. For great vistas there are plenty of hillside courses (Boavista, Parque Da Floresta) that can be a bit cooler to play at the height of summer and afford some great views.

Of the newer courses the Oceanico Faldo course is the most unique to the region due to its desert-style architecture. Dunes, deep bunkers and rolling greens make it a challenge to make par. The neighboring O’Connor parkland course is equally well maintained and plays a little more benignly thanks to the sheltering woodland that is peppered around the course.

In terms of golf holidays Portugal has developed some of the finest courses to be built in Europe over the past twenty years and the promise of year round mild weather makes it a more reliable location to play mid-winter.

Some Sights in Santa Pola

Approximately 30,000 people inhabit Santa Pola. It is a small fishing village on the Mediterranean coast and has been an important port since the 4th century BC. Although, it was the Romans who began utilizing its position near the sea for transport and fishing but Santa Pola was settled a long time ago in the Neolithic era.

Santa Pola has preserved its traditions, buildings and culture that are in constant danger from the encroaching developments of tourism, as is common in modern day Alicante. Therefore, there is much to see in this historical town. The old Roman town of Portus Illlicitanus, or Port of Elche, was the base of the present day Santa Pola. Its ruins are present just at the beginning of the town and all visitors are welcome to admire them.

After the Roman’s empire fell, during the Middle Ages, the port became highly useless and dangerous. This was due to the pirates who attacked the ships and fishing vessels making it difficult for any kind of trade or business to be carried out successfully. The effort to defend the town from these pirates gave Santa Pola another of its beautiful structures which is the object of visitor’s interest. This is the Castle of Santa Pola. The castle was built according to the Renaissance style of architecture with two watchtowers and bastions flanking each of them.

The Castle is worth a visit as it contains three more places that deserve to be seen. The chapel to the Lady of Loreto is a part of the castle’s fortress along with the Museum of Sea and Salt and the large exhibition hall. This museum is dedicated to the fishing history of the town and contains many objects related to this occupation. You will find fishing equipment and other naval items and a beautiful large aquarium. The Archeological Museum is also inside the Castle of Santa Pola and allows the visitor to go though the history of the town from the Iberian to the present times.
