Gingivitis and the Importance of Flossing

Everyone knows that they are supposed to floss, but how many people actually do it? Did you know that flossing is one of the best things you can do for a healthy mouth. Gingivitis affects thousands of people every year and it all could be easily avoided by taking a few simple steps. Brushing for the recommended two minutes a twice daily and regular flossing can do more for a your mouth then any other activity. Gingivitis is caused by extensive plaque build up. Plaque is a sticky film that coats your teeth on a daily basis. If you do not take proper care of your teeth plaque can build up to the point in which it deteriorates your teeth and gums. Gingivitis occurs when this bacteria gets below the gum line and causes inflammation. Some of the other side affects of gingivitis are bleeding gums, sore chewing, swollen gums, and bad breath that wont go away. Proper flossing consists of getting between each tooth. If you notice your gums form a V shape between teeth. Make sure to get the floss on deep on both sides of this V to clear out all the plaque and bacteria that are hiding down inside.
