Is Buying Used Power Generators a Good Option?

Those who are looking to buy a power generator for backup or recreational applications know how expensive these machines can get. While there are cheaper ones available, if you wish to buy something of good quality and incorporate the latest technologies, you will have to prepare to pay higher. If buying new is really not an option because of the prohibitive prices, one option that many people consider is buying used power generators.

Is it a good idea?

If you are looking to buy one for standby or backup power systems purposes, then you are sure to find a lot of good second hand units out there that are still in good condition. This is because being standby or backup systems, they are surely not used all the time and have not undergone a lot of wear and tear especially if maintained as recommended by the manufacturer. You are sure to find 10 year old units that have only been used for a few hundreds of hours or even less which makes them a good buy should you be looking for a used generator.

On the other hand, if you are looking to get a portable generator that you can use for recreational purposes then you will have a harder time finding a good sample since being recreational generators, they most likely have experience significant wear and tear because of the rugged nature of outdoor recreational activities. The wear and tear on generator parts may be significantly worse in portable units compared to standby or backup units.

If you are looking to get one of those used silent generators then you have to check the units personally before actually buying them. Hence, this eliminates the option of buying used recreational generators online where you cannot check the units before buying. You will need to see if the unit is still silent or is still capable of operating quietly since it may have been used extensively and may have lost that capability in the process.

While buying used units is always an option worth checking out, you need to know how to assess whether a used power generator is still in great condition and whether or not you will get your money’s worth. However, sometimes, depending on the situation, buying second hand units may pose significant disadvantages.
