Keeping an Outdoor Dog Kennel

A large proportion of dog owners like to have an outdoor dog kennel for their canine friend to use.  There are a variety of reasons for having a kennel including giving their dog a protected area in which he can sleep or just rest when he is outside and as somewhere to send their dog when they need him out of harm’s way.

If your dog is going to sleep in their kennel overnight or even during the day in colder weather then you will need to ensure that you buy an insulated dog house.  The insulation felt will help to keep the dog’s body warmth in, keeping him snug even in the coldest of temperatures.  Wooden dog kennels are the best type of dog house to use for overnight sleeping for this very reason.

Of course it may be that your dog sleeps in the house and so you don’t require your dog kennel to be particularly enclosed or warm.   Some people just need somewhere for their dog to go for a few hours a day where they can run around and play without getting into trouble.  If this is the case then a dog exercise pen is ideal.  A pen gives the dog space to enjoy the outdoors with all its smells and fresh air without worrying about them escaping onto a road or digging up the flower beds.

If you are going to keep an outdoor dog kennel then make sure that you think carefully about where it is going to be situated as most of these dog houses are quite heavy and so aren’t easy to move around.  It needs to be somewhere that is shaded from direct sunlight and won’t be exposed to strong winds or driving rain.  If it is made from wood then it will need to be weatherproofed annually to prevent it from getting damaged by the elements.
