Outside Sales Job Description

Outsides sales is the same thing as field sales.  They primarily make sales calls outside of the office.  Those in outside sales jobs usually meet there prospects in their homes or places of work where they do their sales presentations.

Most outside sales reps do their paperwork and cold calls in the office.  They may go in and out for meetings.  Most probably have regular meetings at the office that they have to attend.

Some reps work from home.  Some go in once a week for meetings then work out of their houses.  There are others who don’t even have an office and work out of their cars.  It just depends on the position and job requirements.

It used to be that outside sales reps tended to make more money than inside sales reps, but it’s not so much the case anymore with new technologies and enable inside reps to be more efficient and effective.  In the case of field sales reps who do business to business sales, they tend to make more money than consumer sales.

The exception to that would be personal finance sales like financial advising or selling insurance.  Those reps can make a lot of money, sometimes into the six figure range.  Usually consumer sales tends to be harder and make less money.  It is heavily reliant upon volume.

Being an outside sales rep can be a tough job.  There is usually a lot of traveling involved if your territory is wider than your local area.  Some reps have territories that are scattered across the county, which means a lot of distance and time spent traveling.

There is also an efficiency lost as well.  They spend so much time driving, in airports, in the air, and checking into hotels that they don’t have as much time to be productive as those in the office.  With the rising costs of traveling and advancement in internet technology, outside sales is becoming more rare than it was.
