Victorian & Edwardian Differences in the Antique Tub Chair

Tub chairs are the unusual looking chairs that resemble a bathtub cut down the center. These chairs, also called Captain’s or barrel chairs, are actually from an older design and always consist of a half circle shape that seems to swallow the person sitting in it. The influence of the first tub chair dates back to the Egyptian tombs and artifacts where images of fancy thrones and other sitting chairs are similar in design to the tub chair styles of today. As you look at the trends of interior design of the late 19th century, both Victorian and Edwardian styles influenced the furniture. Today, each style of antique tub chair is considered a collector’s item.

The Victorian period is identified with Queen Victoria, who reigned from 1837 to 1901. The furnishings are highly influenced by the Gothic idea of characteristic dark finishes, colors and elaborate ornamentation. The choice of darker woods like mahogany added to the heavier theme. The tub chairs were upholstered with thicker fabrics and velvets and they were designed with deeper seats. These chairs matched the interiors of the house with its ornately carved furniture and heavy window treatments.

The Edwardian period, on the other hand, is known for its elegance and lighter quality. Named for the 1901 to 1910 reign of King Edward VII of England, the primary concern of English craftsmen was creating light, airy and cheerful items. The tub chairs were a mix of styles and influences, but they were generally made with brighter colors and lightweight fabrics. To add to the cheerful décor, these chairs were even found in floral designs. This period is more difficult to identify than its darker counterpart, but the overall purpose of Edwardian furniture was more about establishing when a piece was made, not its specific characteristics.

When decorating a room with one of these antique tub chairs, an added benefit is that they can be easily placed in any room of the house. Their flexibility toward interior décor and design allows you to really enjoy sitting in one whether you are relaxing with a good book or talking to a friend.
