What To Look For In A Good Pair Of Safety Glasses

Most eye injuries that happen to people are while they are playing a sport or other physical activity. Anytime we get on a motorcycle or even go outside to play catch we put ourselves and especially our eyes at risk. Wearing sunglasses, while they offer protection from the sun, are not good sources of eye protection. What makes a pair of glasses good eye protection?

Good safety glasses are shatter proof. If something does actually smack you right in the eye area you want to know if the lens is going to hold up or if it is going to shatter into your eyeball. If the lens shatters the glasses actually made the impact of say getting hit in the eye with a baseball much worse. When looking for your own pair of safety glasses make sure the product states that the lens is polycarbonate. This material is an anti-shatter type of plastic and will help protect the eye from shards of plastic that might otherwise break off into your eye from an impact.

A great pair of safety glasses to look for is sports eye guards. These eye guards are similar to regular glasses or sunglasses but they offer far more protection. The biggest feature of these safety glasses is that if the lens is forced to come out it will pop out forwards instead of backwards into your eye. This type of safety glasses is popular with people that have to wear prescription glasses because some eye guards are made to fit over the glasses effectively making a pair of prescription safety glasses.

Some safety glasses can come in varieties that look like water goggles. These safety glasses will enclose the eye further protecting it from a sudden and unexpected impact. Because these glasses encase the entire eye it is important to keep the fogging down otherwise the visibility will make it very difficult to see and being blind while doing any type of physical activity is a hazard in itself. To prevent fogging it helps to find glasses that have side vents that will allow for ventilation.

You would be surprised to know that just about any sport or physical work activity can lead to an eye injury either by impact or by floating debris that wants to find a home in your eyeball. Protect those eyes because even the most honest mistake can lead to a lifetime of vision impairment.
